Closed Airspace In US Disrupted By 1,600 Drones During World Cup – FBI Chief
WASHINGTON, July 21 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- United States (US) law enforcement officers detected around 1,600 drones in the closed airspace in the US during the FIFA World Cup, with 700 of them confiscated, FBI Director Kash Patel said on Tuesday, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
“By the end of the tournament, nearly 1,600 drones had been detected in restricted airspace and more than 700 operating illegally had been seized,” Patel wrote on the social media platform X.
About 6.8 million people attended 104 football matches during the tournament, Patel said, adding that during all that time, “the FBI worked around the clock with federal, state, local and international partners to secure the largest sporting event in history.”
Law enforcement officers “shared intelligence, protected venues and addressed threats before they could put fans at risk,” the FBI chief said.
The 2026 World Cup championship was held from June 11 to July 19. It was the first tournament to feature 48 teams and to be held across three countries, namely the US, Mexico and Canada.
On Sunday, the Spanish national football team defeated Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final, becoming a two-time winner of the tournament. The final match took place in New Jersey.
