Australia Coach Popovic's Contract Extended Until 2027
BERLIN, June 12 (Bernama-dpa) -- Australia coach Tony Popovic has had his contract extended until 2027 on the eve of the team's opening World Cup match against Turkiye on Saturday.
Football Australia said that Popovic will now stay on until next year's Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.
Popovic played for the Socceroos at the 2006 World Cup and became coach in 2024. He has recorded 10 wins from 18 matches in charge, alongside four draws and four defeats.
Australia qualified convincingly for a seventh World Cup, where apart from Turkiye they will face co-hosts United States and Paraguay in the group stage.
"Tony is a world-class coach, and he has proven his ability to deliver results while developing talent at the same time," Football Australia chief executive Martin Kugeler said.
Popovic said: "It has been an honour and a privilege to lead the Socceroos, and it is a role that I thoroughly enjoy and one I have never taken for granted.
“My absolute focus right now is on the FIFA World Cup 2026. I’m proud to lead my country into a World Cup, but most importantly, I want to ensure that our team is fully prepared and focused on our group matches."
