Super-sub Merino Does It Again, Sends Spain To Semis After 16 Years
KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 (Bernama) -- Midfielder Mikel Merino once again proved Spain's saviour as his second-half winner fired the 2010 champions into the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-finals with a 2-1 victory over Belgium at Los Angeles Stadium, California, on Friday.
The substitute, who scored the decisive goal in Spain's 1-0 round-of-16 win over Portugal last Monday, delivered when it mattered most to send La Roja into the last four of football's biggest tournament for the first time in 16 years.
Spain, who began brightly and enjoying plenty of possession, threatened in the 21st minute when 18-year-old wonderkid Lamine Yamal curled an effort just wide of the left post.
After the hydration break, midfielder Fabian Ruiz put Luis de la Fuente’s side ahead in the 30th minute, pouncing on a rebound after Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois produced a fine save to deny winger Dani Olmo’s effort earlier.
The 34-year-old Courtois denied four-times European champions a second goal in the 35th minute, diving low to his right to keep out Yamal's free-kick destined for the bottom corner.
However, Spain conceded for the first time in this edition tournament when full back Timothy Castagne whipped in an inviting cross from the right for forward Charles De Ketelaere, who powered a downward header past Unai Simon in the 41st minute.
Belgium, coached by Frenchman Rudi Garcia, came close to taking the lead 10 minutes into the second half, but full-back Maxim De Cuyper's effort struck the side netting.
Courtois continued to frustrate Spain by producing back-to-back saves within a minute to deny Yamal and forward Mikel Oyarzabal before making way for Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens in the 71st minute due to an apparent leg injury.
And that proved costly for the Red Devils as Lammens spilled centre-back Pau Cubarsi's long-range effort, with Merino reacting quickest to fire home a poacher's finish in the 88th minute.
Spain will set up a mouthwatering clash against France in Dallas Stadium on July 15 after the two-time champions saw off Morocco 2-0, Thursday.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 which is co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States features 48 teams, making it the largest-ever tournament organised in the history of world football since the inaugural edition in Uruguay in 1930.
The FIFA World Cup 2026, which kicked off on June 11 will run until July 19.
