England Finish Third At 2026 World Cup With 6-4 Win Over France
KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 (Bernama) -- England finished third at the 2026 World Cup after defeating France 6-4 in a thrilling third-place play-off at the Miami Stadium in the United States on Saturday.
The victory saw the 1966 champions end their campaign in third place for the first time in World Cup history.
England captain Declan Rice opened the scoring with a powerful strike from outside the penalty area that beat France goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
The lead was doubled in the 18th minute when Ezri Konsa headed home a corner taken by Rice.
The Three Lions continued to dominate as Bukayo Saka scored twice in the 37th minute and first-half stoppage time to hand England a commanding 4-0 lead going into the break.
France staged a fightback in the second half through Kylian Mbappe's goal in the 48th minute before Bradley Barcola added Les Bleus' second six minutes later.
Mbappe struck again in the 66th minute to reduce the deficit to 4-3.
His 10th goal of the tournament also saw him overtake Argentina's Lionel Messi as the top scorer at the 2026 World Cup.
England restored their two-goal advantage in the 87th minute after the referee awarded a penalty following Malo Gusto's foul on an England player inside the penalty area.
Saka calmly converted the spot-kick to complete his hat-trick.
In stoppage time, Ousmane Dembele scored to keep France's hopes alive by narrowing the score to 5-4.
However, Jude Bellingham sealed England's victory with a goal deep into stoppage time to complete the 6-4 scoreline.
